Bishop Ovide Charlebois was born on February 17th,
1862, and at the age of twenty entered the novitiate of the
Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. In 1887 he was ordained priest
and sent to the missions of the West. For sixteen years he lived
alone at Cumberland House working closely amongst the native people.
Named Vicar Apostolic of Keewatin in 1910, he laboured at the
difficult task of organizing his vast vicariate with humble yet
indomitable patience and courage until he died a holy death on
November 20, 1933. The archdiocese of Keewatin Le Pas was officially
estabished in 1967.
This missionary archdiocese continues the legacy
of Bishop Charlebois, in bringing the Good News to the people of a
vast northern territory. In the contemporary life of our
church, the formation and preparation of laity continues to be a
priority. We invite your assistance in helping us reach our
potential through your generous contributions.
